WHITNEY: “Sparkle” Reviews

2012-08-17 - 17:59 | Whitney Houston | No comments

The big screen loved Whitney….The Bodyguard, Waiting To Exhale, The Preachers Wife…and now SPARKLE!!!

“Sparkle”, a remake of the 1976 film starring Irene Cara, is about big-dreamer Sparkle (Sparks) and her two sisters living in Detroit in the 1960s. The girls form a group and become Motown superstars, but fame is not a fairytale and life becomes challenging.

Houston plays Emma, the girls’ over-bearing mother who was a former R&B singer. The character’s mistakes and struggles in the music industry pushed her to turn toward the church for solace.

The role seems to echo parts of Houston’s life.

Houston, who started out singing in her Newark, N.J. church, enjoyed immense fame before drugs began to take a toll. In the months prior to her death, Houston was reportedly trying to become more connected with God. In the film, she warns her daughters of the dangers of the entertainment industry.

Critics reviewed Houston’s “Sparkle” performance and noted the vibrancy she displayed on screen.

“At times, it’s like a Joan Crawford neurotic-mother fantasy, and the gravelly conviction of Whitney Houston’s performance proves that this could have been the first step not merely in a comeback but in a major re-invention,” Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gliberman wrote. “She had the instincts of a superb character actress.”

“Envisioned as a starring vehicle for Sparks, ‘Sparkle’ is also a fitting curtain call for Houston,” USA Today reporter Claudia Puig said. “Her character’s ultimate willingness to acknowledge her daughter’s dreams and encourage the musical aspirations of the next generation is a lovely final tribute.”

Houston does not truly show off her own vocal chords until the end of the film. Houston’s voice, which has changed throughout the years, proved to be as moving as ever.

“While ‘Sparkle’ doesn’t give the audience a lasting memory of Houston’s voice at its most soaring, it does manage to provide a lingering sense of loss, mixed with celebration and grim irony,” according to Washington Post critic Ann Hornaday.

Houston’s performance aside, the film overall received decent reviews, but critics were sure to highlight the pitfalls, many of which focused on Sparks’ performance.

“Here’s the main problem with the film,” Vicki Hyman of The Star Ledger said. “It keeps returning to earnest, just-happy-to-be-here Sparkle, when Sister is the real showstopper: daring and damaged, vixenish yet vulnerable. Whether she’s performing at the clubs in a series of ever-more-microscopic minidresses or scrambling for her next fix (‘Sister can’t fly on one wing’), you can’t take your eyes off her. Ejogo, a British actress and singer, deserves a showcase of her own.”

Sparks’ acting was also viewed as weak.

“The film is meant to be a showcase for Sparks. But while she is a sweet presence, she isn’t a natural actress,” the New York Daily News’ Elizabeth Weitzman wrote. “She lacks the vulnerability of Irene Cara, the original Sparkle, and doesn’t seem fully comfortable until the soaring finale, when she’s allowed to tap into her true gift: her voice.”

“While the film’s melodrama is laughable (after Sister’s comedian beau, played by Mike Epps, flops at a club, the two run – in slow-motion – to the car), the real problem is that it’s unclear who the main character is supposed to be,” according to People magazine’s Lesley Messer. Messer goes on to say that, even though the title makes it seem like Sparkle (Sparks) is the star, the plot revolves mainly around Sister (Carmen Ejogo).

Messer concludes, writing, “If ‘Dreamgirls’ was a diamond, ‘Sparkle’ is a cubic zirconia: It feels like a cheap imitation of the real thing.”

Reviews may have been shaky, but those dearest to Houston were nothing but thrilled with the final product. Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina celebrated the premiere of her mother’s movie with singer Ray J and her aunt Pat Houston.

Ray J told E! News he was “touched” and “emotional” to see Houston’s last work.

“I can’t even start with one thing [I wish people would remember about her],” he said. “It’s just so much.”

“Sparkle” opens in theaters nationwide Friday, Aug. 17.

BARBRA: Remembers The Great Marvin Hamlisch RIP

2012-08-08 - 02:14 | Barbra Streisand | No comments

One of Barbra Streisand’s oldest and dearest friends, Marvin Hamlisch, died today in Los Angeles, at the age of 68, following a brief illness. Barbra’s friendship with Marvin spanned nearly 50 years, as he was the rehearsal pianist in her first starring role on Broadway, “Funny Girl.”

The two formed a close connection, and in 1973, when Streisand was the star of the film “The Way We Were,” she chose Marvin to compose the score. He also collaborated with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman to created the love song for the film, which became an instant classic and one of Streisand’s signature songs. For his work on the film, Hamlisch won two Oscars that year, and a third as well for his adapting Scott Joplin’s ragtime music for “The Sting.

Soon after, Hamlisch returned to Broadway where he collaborated with Edward Kleban on the Michael Bennett musical “A Chorus Line.” For that, Marvin collected Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize.

Through the years, Barbra and Marvin remained close friends. He contributed songs for her albums, like “Niagara” on “Wet.” When she did an ACLU benefit for Daniel Ellsberg in April 1973, it was Marvin at the piano, helping her to auction off songs to the celebrity crowd.

In 1993, when Barbra chose to return to the concert stage in years, it was Marvin Hamlisch whom she asked to be the musical conductor. As Barbra pointed out when introducing him on the subsequent tour, Marvin didn’t need the gig. He was there out of friendship and love. When “The Concert” was broadcast on HBO as a television special, it collected a bunch of Emmys, including two for Marvin’s work on the show.

In 1996, Barbra directed “The Mirror Has Two Faces” and again turned to Marvin for the score. Two years later, for an even more personal production, he wrote her wedding theme when she married James Brolin and conducted the orchestra at the nuptials.

As recently as last December, Marvin was Barbra’s accompanist at the women’s heart benefit for Cedar-Sinai Hospital. Today, Barbra issued a brief statements about her good friend:

I’m devastated. He was my dear friend. He’s been in my life ever since the first day I met him in 1963, when he was my rehearsal pianist for “Funny Girl.” He played at my wedding in 1998… and recently for me at a benefit for women’s heart disease. The world will remember Marvin for his brilliant musical accomplishments, from “A Chorus Line” to “The Way We Were,” and so many others, but when I think of him now, it was his brilliantly quick mind, his generosity, and delicious sense of humor that made him a delight to be around. Just last night, I was trying to reach him, to tell him how much I loved him, and that I wanted to use an old song of his, that I had just heard for the first time. He was a true musical genius, but above all that, he was a beautiful human being. I will truly miss him.”

Courtney Love: Schools Lana Del Rey

2012-08-03 - 16:18 | Courtney Love | No comments

You can always count on Courtney Love for a provacative soundbite!!! Lol!! Courtney had a few choice words for Lana Del Rey in light of the ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer’s cover of Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’, which she debuted last week in Sydney.

Writing on Twitter, in posts which have now been deleted, the Hole frontwoman said: “You do know the song is about my Vagina right? ‘Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back,’ umm… On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?”

Lana Del Rey performed the Nirvana classic during a show at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on July 26.

‘Heart-Shaped Box’ was the first single from Nirvana’s third studio album ‘In Utero’. Released in August 1993, it reached Number Five on the UK singles chart.Del

Rey has previously discussed the impact the song had on her when she was growing up. Speaking to a radio station at the end of last year, she said: “When I was 11, I saw Kurt Cobain singing ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ on MTV and it really stopped me dead in my tracks. I thought he was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. Even at a young age, I really related to his sadness.”

MADONNA: Flashes Breast Again In Paris

2012-07-16 - 19:41 | Madonna | No comments

Proving that she’s clearly not concerned by her detractors or critics, Madonna flashed her boob yet again, this time in Paris. It’s funny to me how some people are so outraged by this….with many saying ” She’s 53 now, it’s sad”. Whatever, Madonna is still gorgeous, vivacious, and controversial and has amazing breasts! I’d show them too! Whatever hang ups people have over nudity and sexuality, they are not nor have they ever been Madonna’s and i applaud her for always being one who truly xpresses herself no matter what people say!!!
